The Royal Academy of Arts celebrates the quintessentially English prints of artist Stanley Anderson in a charming and vivid exploration of how he really viewed the world around him
Stanley Anderson artist biography
Although he also worked with etching and watercolours, Stanley Anderson is best known for pioneering the revival of engraving, which by the 1920s was all but obsolete. He first learned the technique as an apprentice to a heraldic engraver during WW1, and by 1951 had received a CBE for his exquisite and witty prints of English rural life.

There is nowhere more suited to celebrate Stanley Anderson engraving, as he exhibited over 214 pieces here during his career and forms an integral part of the Royal Academy of Arts Collection.
The Royal Academy exhibition, London presents his most famous engravings of England’s historic crafts and trades alongside lesser-known works. Scenes from bustling London markets and sites of oppressive construction and demolition suggest that, far from just a nostalgic celebration of rural traditions, Anderson’s prints are a warning about the emotional and spiritual emptiness of modernity.
