Carel Visser: Counterbalance, Mayor Gallery

Artist Carel Visser is a big name in his native Holland, known for his dynamic metal sculptures inspired by the patterns of nature like branches of trees and traces of sand. As a follower of geometric abstraction, you’ll recognise hints of Brancusi and Giacometti in this
sculptor’s work.
Carel Visser sculpture and biography
After studying at the Academy in The Hague, Visser moved to Amsterdam where he made a career from making drawings of plants and insects, and stylised sculptures in a number of different materials and forms. From birds made of galvanised iron to rectangular slab structures, Visser turned in the 1960s to more open forms of stacked and folded sheet metal.
Mayor Gallery sculpture exhibition London
Following his first major retrospective in the UK at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London in 1978 (organised by Tate Director Sir Nicholas Serota), Mayor Gallery reacquaints us with the simplicity of Visser’s work.
A series of sculptures, drawings and collage assemblages from 1951 to 1998 make up this new exhibition in the original cork street gallery, including the well known Salami and Double Form series.
