“Art has been my weapon in life”, says artist Chu Enoki, who celebrates his first solo exhibition in the UK at White Rainbow gallery, London this spring.
Chu Enoki biography
The aftermath of military violence has been an on going motif in Chu Enoki’s life. Born in 1944 in a town next to an American army base, he grew up in the years of hardship immediately following Japan’s defeat in World World Two.

His performances, sculptures, installations and drawings are preoccupied with the instruments of violence – frequently featuring heavy, industrial components made of metal and resin – but at the same time, with humanity’s potential to transcend conflict and do good. A cannon, Enoki shows, is just as much a beautiful work of engineering as an agent of war.
In Chu Enoki: Enoki Chu, we encounter some of the more intimate pieces that have been the backdrop to Enoki’s development as a maverick figure in postwar Japanese conceptual art.
