Long-established east London gallery Maureen Paley, which showcases internationally renowned contemporary artists working in numerous disciplines, exhibits Lithuanian filmmaker Deimantas Narkevičius from the end of February.
This solo show highlights two films by Deimantas Narkevičius: The Role of a Lifetime (2003) and Into the Unknown (2009). Each piece of Deimantas Narkevičius art uses found and archival footage, overlaid with interviews and other appropriated material. The results question the ways in which we interpret European history after the fall of the Berlin wall, and how we construct both personal and collective memories.

The Role of a Lifetime, combines disparate footage to create an interesting dialogue considering how the image might play a unique role in history. In contrast, Into the Unknown takes material from the E-TV archive of life in former East Germany, often created for propaganda, and explores the control these images exerted.
With the 25th anniversary of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall only a few months ago, Maureen Paley provides a timely look at the art that emerged from this turbulent chapter of European recent past.
