Michael Williams: Morning Zoo, Michael Werner

Want to know which painting exhibitions in London to visit? Try American artist Michael Williams’ darkly comic works at Michael Werner

Michael Williams, Morning Zoo, Michael Werner Gallery
Michael Williams’ paintings with their large-scale and Popsicle colours have been causing some commotion state-side. Now for his first London solo exhibition, the darkly comic and psychedelic imagination of this American painter is transforming the contemporary art gallery Michael Werner.

In a unique combination of traditional and contemporary painterly techniques, Michael Williams’ art is a fascinating journey into the possibilities of computer-based work. Drawing first onto a tablet before editing his compositions and sometimes painting the surface, Williams is reminiscent of the fantastically popular David Hockney iPad paintings which we all glimpsed at the sell-out Royal Academy, David Hockney exhibition. This ‘chaotic’ combination of digital and hand-made drawing questions the material reality of painting, and delights in the combined efforts of the computer alongside the artist. The results in are intoxicating in their bright abstract colours and tactile surface, and are well worth a visit.
