Highlights amongst this year’s winners include Philippe Lopez’ ‘Typhoon Survivors’ (2014); a goose-bump inducing image of the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines carrying religious images to the less-affected areas of the archipelago. Look out also for Emiliano Lasalvia’s death defying ‘Polo Fall’ (2013) and the African migrants on the shore of Djibouti City in John Stanmeyer’s ‘Signal’ (2013), raising their phones in an attempt to find signal from neighbouring Somalia and make contact with lost relatives.
British winners
This year four UK photographers have been recognised for their breath-taking photographs. In the staged portraits category don’t miss Abbie Trayler-Smith’s ‘Shannon(2014), the 16th year old girl from Sheffield who chose to have a balloon inserted into her stomach for six months to help her lose weight, and Nadav Kander’s image of the star of the Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor. Other British photographers that have received prizes include Marcus Bleasdale for his series on modern-day whalers and Julie McGuire’s image of the asylum for street dogs in Malaysia.
