The UK premiere of In High Fashion, The Condé Nast Years 1923-1937 presents over 200 vintage prints by Edward Steichen, chief photographer at Condé Nast during the 1920’s and 30’s. Regarded by many as the first ‘modern’ fashion photographer, Steichen worked on Condé Nast’s two most prestigious publications, Vogue and Vanity Fair, during this period. This exhibition offers a unique insight into his distinctive style and approach toward fashion photography, bringing together many images that haven’t been displayed publicly since the 1930’s.
While at Condé Nast, Steichen was said to have been the best known and highest paid photographer in the world, photographing iconic figures in politics, literature, dance and theatre, as well as the world of haute-couture. The photographs of In High Fashion have a wonderful variety, from the designs of Chanel, Lanvin and Lelong, to seminal portraits of Winston Churchill, Frank Lloyd Wright and George Gershwin.
