Adriano Costa: Touch me I am geometrically sensitive, Sadie Coles HQ

Adriano Costa is very much a Brazilian artist. If this summer’s World Cup  presented the complicated social, political and cultural issues within Brazil to a global audience, Costa’s work achieves much the same effect through his assemblage of discarded objects salvaged from the flotsam and jetsam of daily life.
Living and working in one of Sao Paolo’s most notorious districts has sharpened Costa’s appreciation of the debris left behind by the living. Using materials most would consider only fit for the bin, Costa places everyday objects like packaging, bottles, pieces of cloth and broken umbrellas in the rarefied economy of the art gallery, delivering a subtle critique on how market values can elevate or degrade an object. 
In his first solo show at Sadie Coles, Costa presents a review of the summer transcribed through materials collected during a two month stay in London. From free newspaper articles on Flight MH17 and the rise of ISIS to a collage constructed from bin bags, Costa sweeps the streets of London to reinstate a quiet dignity to the unremarkable discharge of our city.
