Contemporary Realism, Albemarle Gallery

How do you define contemporary realism? At the Albemarle Gallery, submissions to a new group exhibition of portraits consider the universal themes of realist art

There are many different types of realist artists who each express the world ‘realistically’ in a unique way. As viewers, we all see differently too. In this exhibition at the quirky Albemarle Gallery you don’t need to have a degree in contemporary art to understand what each artist is trying to get at, because the universal act of seeing is at its heart. The subject matter of the human body and realist style are also entirely familiar and accessible, so shed the normal intimidation of a highly conceptual contemporary art exhibition. With this safety net, there is still a sense of imagination and playfulness prompted by the incredible variety between the artists. 

Look out particularly for Ian Cumberland, an Irish born artist who won third prize in the acclaimed BP portrait award back in 2011. His monumental paintings are faithful to both his medium and chosen subject, a practice that the artist describes as ‘gritty’ rather than ‘pretty picture’ making.

Similarly intriguing is the work of Neil Douglas who abandons hyper-realism for a new visual language that includes modern technologies like photography and film without becoming reliant upon them. Culture Whisper are also excited to see the contributions from self- taught artist Philip Monuz who originally studied biochemistry at the University of Bristol. His work examines the idea of glamour within social identity, often depicting young women that have altered their appearance with tattoos and piercings. Finally don’t miss the delicate work of craftsman Harry Holland whose commitment to producing art that is intense and rewarding is entirely intoxicating.
