Thirteen, Alan Cristea Gallery

Every year, the Alan Cristea Gallery shows off its top artists, and 2013‘s Thirteen promises to be a well-rounded selection of cutting-edge contemporary art. This is the exhibition to see in order to discover for yourself the next Big Thing, and maybe even start your own collection.

A huge range of media is being represented, from etchings to video installations. A particular piece worth seeing is Christiane Baumgartner’s woodcut print, Storm at Sea (pictured) a work created with reference to documentary footage of World War Two, its grainy, abstracted figures lending a haunting air. This exhibition also offers the chance to see a huge new print by Howard Hodgkin, who is known as one of Britain’s foremost painters. His print work is particularly extraordinary because although it appears to be a random explosion of vibrant colour and paint, it is in fact a careful, deliberate layering of etching and hand painting. The print on show, A Summer Dress, is a dramatic exploration of shape and texture, of green and blue.

With thirteen artists presenting markedly different approaches to contemporary art, there is surely something for everyone.
