Oscar Murillo: Manifestation, David Zwirner

Oscar Murillo is the name on everybody's lips at the moment with the artist bagging a prestigious Turner Prize nomination in May. The Colombian-born artist finds expression through diverse media, including video art, installation, and papier-mâché, exploring questions of community and humanity within the context of globalisation.

The act of painting, however, is central to Murillo's practice, and is one of the most important ways that the artist engages with the material world. In past works, he has used deeply symbolic materials such as corn, dirt and silk to explore cultural identities and economic markets across his canvases. The artist is not only one of the most exciting painters operating today, but is also one of the key figures keeping the medium alive and relevant within the contemporary art landscape.

A new exhibition at David Zwirner's London gallery unveils new paintings by Murillo and also provides an insight into the artist's creative process by featuring ongoing bodies of work. These new works are concerned with they ways that information is disseminated in today's world by mimicking processes of 'erasure and retention'.
