Get involved with the New Tate Modern: opening weekend sees a host of activities

A very arty farty party: come and celebrate the transformed Tate Modern

Tate Modern opening festival
The new Tate Modern is a triumph. An upside-down pyramid that twists and turns, this new extension packs an almighty punch. And speaking of twists and turns, the collection is unlike any other housed in a Western Museum. 120 years of received art history have been turned on their head, as the building is filled with women and global art. Matisse, Rothko and Picasso rub shoulders with little known artists from Latin America, South East Asia, Eastern Europe. We love it, as you'll see when you read our review.

This weekend, 17-19 June, Tate Modern are throwing a bit of a party to celebrate. It will be open 'til 10 every night, with a host of performances, activities, talks and workshops.

There's a heck of a lot going on, so we've picked out the highlights on each day. But perhaps the best thing to do is to wander – there'll be a surprise round every corner.

Friday

Tate Collective, a group of 15-25 year olds, are kicking things of with a future-themed evening. Digital art is the name of the game, with a range of installations and activities with emerging artists and creatives, all to the pulse of a soundtrack by hipper-than-thou collective Radar Radio.

Be sure not to miss hotly tipped artist Benedict Drew's multimedia installation on the fifth floor of the Switch House.

Saturday
The centrepiece of the weekend is a specially-commissioned choral work by artist Peter Liversidge, performed at 5pm on Saturday 18 June by over 500 singers from community choirs across London

Don't miss a series of talks introducing the new collection displays from 12 - 6pm either.

Sunday
Chill out in the refurbished Starr cinema, where you'll find a host of film and video works from the Tate collection. Derek Jarman, Andrea Fraser, Anri Sala and Frances Stark are just some of the artist on show.

Dive in to the most important art event of the year.
