Muscle Memory exhibition, Elephant West

Painter Anna Liber Lewis and musician Kieran Hebden, otherwise known as Four Tet, join forces for new Elephant West exhibition, Muscle Memory. The lifelong friends present their respective art forms to offer visitors a one-of-a-kind, multi-sensory experience.

Liber Lewis sent Hebden a series of paintings over the course of six months. He then created three new tracks in response to the images, with the intention of echoing their emotional journey. These tracks will be exclusive to Elephant West. Liber Lewis explains how ‘we were both influenced by how we move through the world and the people and things closest to us.’ Through its presentation of paintings and music in tandem, the exhibition plays with your sense of sight and sound.

Both Liber Lewis and Hebden have lost their fathers in the past year; this exhibition explores their consequential grief. However, it is also intended as a celebration of life. Visitors are encouraged to dance along to the music and interact with the work in a way that is forbidden at more traditional art viewing venues. This exhibition adheres nicely to Elephant West’s stated ambition of being a space for experimentation and interdisciplinary practice, promising to be a treat for both the eyes and ears.
