The Miaz Brothers: Anonymous, Lazinc Gallery

The swankiest new gallery in town, co-founded by Steve Lazarides and Wissam Al Mana, is getting ready to stage its second exhibition. Following the success (and Instagram fame) of JR's Giants: A Body of Work, we are champing at the bit with excitement.

Unlike the last, Anonymous will be an intimate exhibition showcasing just sixteen new works by the Italian contemporary art duo, The Miaz Brothers. Addressing issues of anonymity and the metaphor of status in our existence, the exhibited portraits challenge the forever evolving role of contemporary art today.

The sixteen anonymous portraits in this exhibition depict a cross-section of society and cultures, and transcend location and time. While all are completed with acrylic on canvas, these large-format works are painted with a bolder, broader brush stroke prompting the viewer to look beyond both line and form.

Out of focus, ghost-like yet utterly mysterious, The Miaz Brothers annihilate detail; it's all about perception rather than representation. In a world dominated by sophisticated algorithms, regimented structures, and facial-recognition technology, identity is a valuable commodity traded knowingly or unknowingly by all. In these formidable works, the sitters are bestowed with 'an increasingly precious gift: anonymity'.
