Mattia Bonetti, David Gill Gallery

Mattia Bonetti is best known for his irreverent designs – we’re talking side tables that look like stacks of whoopee cushions, or display cabinets encased with savage, gold-plated-brass spikes that resemble the gaping jaws of a great white shark – and is widely regarded as one of the most innovative furniture designers working today. The Swiss-born designer has been part of the avant-garde in conceptualist design for the past 30 years – almost as long as he's been represented by London’s prestigious David Gill Gallery.

But unlike his confrères (Bonetti now lives and works in north-west Paris) he doesn’t have a signature style. He references no particular period either, preferring to mould his collections to his metamorphosing tastes. Comprising a selection of one-off pieces, his collections startle, dumbfound and even shock at times. He appeases no one but himself.

Bonetti's ethos derives from a radical vision to innovate. Design is about dreaming, Bonetti once said, the bolder the better. It's quite clear that, on trend, greys, whitewashed walls and no-fuss minimalism just don’t cut it in a Bonetti-style interior. It’s all about the melange of peacock blues, rococo-gilt ornamentation and 1960s style kitsch. Of course, over the years his designs have attracted an A-list crowd – Bonetti now calls Christian Lacroix and Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis loyal fans.

However, sadly for us mere mortals, a Bonetti-inspired interior revamp is a little out of the question. Fortunately, the opportunity to peruse his newest collection has finally arrived.

A selection of Bonetti’s newest designs, comprising tables, sofas, chairs, mirrors and lighting, will be exhibited at David Gill Gallery later this month. All scultptural yet functional, his designs blur the boundaries between art and design. Highlight pieces on display include Coffee Table DW4, in which metallic geometric circles and spheres create an elegant and futuristic shaped table, and Jungle Lamp, carved out of oak wood with spouting gold leaves.

We can’t wait for this highly anticipated exhibition ahead of Masterpiece. All we can say is expect the unexpected with this new body of work. Bonetti is not one for holding back.
