The London Art Fair returns to Islington with an exciting range of painting, photography and textiles

The art fair season is kicking off, and there is no better place to start your art collection (or to add to it) than the London Art Fair in Islington. This year, the annual fair will bring together over 100 galleries cherry picked from the around the globe, all offering modern and contemporary art. Visitors will also be given insights into the contemporary art market with talks, tours and specially curated sections.
Last year, the London Art Fair launched Platform, an area that focusses on a single theme or discipline. This year, the spotlight falls on textiles as a burgeoning and versatile artistic medium. There will be works by artists who draw on a diverse range of traditions including that of Alice Kettle, who's stitched portraits are made in collaboration with expert needleworkers from the Sindh province in Pakistan. Look out, too, for the work of Björk Haraldsdottír and Jacy Wall, who will be combining ceramics and weaving in a display that explores geometric motifs and patterns inspired by Celtic and Icelandic designs.

London Art Fair's core offering of British art continues this year with established stalwarts, such as Flowers Gallery, who will be exhibiting the work of multimedia artist Julie Cockburn. Cockburn's clever re-appropriation of vintage photographs makes for witty and colourful (not to mention desirable) images. Plus, Frederick Charles Art and Alan Wheatley Art will both be showing work by the Scottish painter Alan Davie, whose colourful canvases tapped in to a global range of traditions.
January, it has to be said, is a gloomy month, so there's every reason to head to Islington to spend a few colourful hours in the company of some top galleries. And there will be plenty for the discerning art lover to get their teeth into.
