Kader Attia knows how it feels to be an outsider. The son of Algerian immigrants who moved to Paris after the Algerian war for independence that had driven France in two, Attia grew up in the gritty banlieues of Paris: suburbs side-lined by French cosmopolitans as not belonging to the metropolis. In these circumstances, it's understandable that the multi-disciplinary artist has spent much of his career exploring the problems of social outcasts.

Alongside a retrospective of American photographer Diane Arbus, the Hayward Gallery, London, presents a long-awaited Kader Attia exhibition in February 2019. His work from the past two decades encourages the viewer to look at the plight of the 'marginalised' in a new light. Refugees, transsexuals and the disabled feature heavily, as does discussion of the legacies of colonialism and the oppressive features of banlieue architecture.

Each work has been richly researched by Attia, and offers an insight into the complex and hybrid nature of his creative process. This is an excellent chance to see one of Europe’s most interesting and provocative living artists.
