Junkie: Jac Leirner, White Cube
Addiction made beautiful at the White Cube: 'Junkie', Jac Lerner's confessional show arrives at Mason's Yard this March
A series of sculptures,
paintings and photographs that reflect on the artist's experiences of
addiction, this exhibition plays with the routines and ephemera (junk) of drug
use (Junkie). In this delicate, surreal show, simple objects of immediate
beauty - a tiny white sculpted heart, for example - are revealed to have more
narcotic origins. The heart is in fact a small, chiselled block of cocaine and
bright green Esmerelda, a
long strip of wood and paper, is, on closer inspection, an arrangement of
joint-rolling paraphernalia.
Leirner was born in Sao Paulo in 1961, where she lives and works today. Her use of found objects is rooted in the post-minimalist, Arte Povera tradition of subverting commercialisation by creating art from valueless, discarded materials. Always deeply personal, Leirner's work draws overtly on her own experiences - spirit levels built into many of the sculptures on display at White Cube Mason's Yard are an explicit reference to the sense of balance she sought in drugs and lost because of them.
In their positions, though, these measuring devices display an equilibrium that might be extended to describe the art itself. Leirner has steered clear of the kind of obvious, emotive content that could turn an exhibition like this into another glib look down skid row, instead creating nuanced work to tell her nuanced, multifaceted story.
