Jim Hodges exhibition, Stephen Friedman

American artist Jim Hodges is known for his poeticism. "Color is an intense experience on its own", he says: a statement that is typical of the New York artist, whose work is tightly bound to the viewer's experience. Since the '80s, Hodges has been prominent on the NYC art scene - and its LGBT scene too. He uses a variety of media, such as drawing, sculpture, painting, readymades to explore the mind, nature spirit, and sex, seeking out "the potential and fullness of experience, the limitlessness of things ..."

If that all sounds high in concept, that's because it is. But that doesn't mean Hodges is inaccessible, as a diminutive new show at Stephen Friedman proves. His usual themes are out in full force: we gaze down into a river, reflecting trees, in 'Nez Perce...' - a painting, removed from the gallery wall and placed on a table. 'Skin' surprises us: what looks like a pile of linen is in fact made of bronze: the ephemeral is made eternal.
