Genevieve Claisse, Connaught Brown

Discover the vibrant work of this pioneering, and remarkably little known, French artist in her first UK solo exhibition

Genevieve Claisse, Connaught Brown
As a pivotal member of the 1950s abstract movement and a strong voice in the art world, Genevieve Claisse is far from low-profile, yet her work is remarkably underappreciated in the UK. Her first UK solo exhibition, to be held this autumn at Connaught Brown, offers a rare opportunity to catch sight of her work this side of the Channel.

When Claisse’s work first emerged onto the scene, the artistic community of Paris were divided. Abstract artists were split between the concepts of lyrical abstraction and a purer constructed geometry – Claisse proceeded to become a driving force of geometric abstraction alongside other influential artists including Victor Vasarely, César Domela, and Jean Gorin. Her work challenged established boundaries and triggered new ideas about line and colour.

Great niece of the abstract artist Auguste Herbin, and in many ways his successor, Claisse has been proclaimed ‘the leading female abstract painter of her generation’ by Connaught Brown. The title appears well deserved, as her voice continues to resonate in contemporary art today.

Claisse has previously participated in group exhibitions at the Hanover Gallery, Redfern, and the Royal Academy, but this solo show is set to be one of the most exciting gallery exhibitions this Autumn.
