Mail art and 'useless machines': avant-garde Argentinian artist Edgardo Antonio Vigo gets his first solo UK exhibition in retrospective Un arte a realizar

Edgardo Antonio Vigo: Poemas Matemàticos (In)comestibiles [(In)edible Mathematical Poems], 1968
Edgardo Antonio Vigo is primarily known for founding the mail art movement (the practice of sending small artworks through the post) in Argentina. In doing so, he revolutionised the spread of artists' works and messages in Latin America.

Now, 20 years after his death, the first solo exhibition of his work comes to the UK. Un arte a realizar (named after his 1968 declaration of artistic intent) demonstrates his lifelong concerns with political and artistic freedom, on the part of both artist and viewer: speaking out increasingly strongly against the injustices of the Argentinian military junta, while simultaneously making art that defies ready interpretation out of everyday objects.

The retrospective includes artworks and documents from Vigo's life: original photographs of his 'useless machines', mail art-based political commentary on Latin American life and US foreign policy, and his famous sculptural piece Poemas Matematicos (In)Comestibiles, made from welded sardine cans.

Un arte a realizar is at Richard Saltoun now.
