Chantal Joffe, Victoria Miro

Some vow to give up chocolate, sugar or dating unsavoury characters when the New Year rolls around. But British painter Chantal Joffe had a more novel resolution at the start of 2018 when she decided to create a self-portrait every day for the next year. Her figurative paintings are imbued with a sense of routine, which also subtly chart her shifting moods and the joys and struggles that we all experience as we take things day by day.

Joffe's well-known loose, gestural style will become significant in this prolific series of self-portraits as brushstrokes become familiar actions of memory. Taken as a whole, the collection will show how self-portraiture can become a way to map the self and its inner-most thoughts through time.

As well as self-portraits, we will also see paintings of the people in Joffe’s life as she depicts herself as both friend and mother. Her work will be held across Victoria Miro’s galleries at Wharf Road and in Mayfair.
