Art Galleries Mayfair: John Baldessari, Marian Goodman Gallery

A new solo show at Marian Goodman Gallery, Mayfair, presents John Baldessari's cerebral creation, Brain/Child

John Baldessari, Brain/Cloud (Two Views): with Palm Tree and Seascape, 2009.
Conceptual American artist John Baldessari returns to London this November with a solo show at Marian Goodman Gallery, Mayfair. Taking centre stage is Baldessari's monumental sculptural installation Brain/Cloud (Two Views): with Palm Tree and Seascape, 2009, on display for the first time since Baldessari's major travelling retrospective in 2010.

The enormous installation, which nods to Rene Magritte’s Not to Be Reproduced, 1937, features an enormous wall-mounted brain, two flanking inkjet seascape prints – one with a palm tree – and a time-delayed video which projects the viewer looking at the sculpture thirty seconds later.

Baldessari has long featured the cloud-form, as well as fragmented, abstract body parts in his work. In Brain/Cloud, Baldessari directly compares the shape of the human brain to that of a cloud, alluding, perhaps, to the abstract and ever-morphing nature of human thought.

A bijou, thought-provoking exhibition not to miss this autumn.
