Albert Oehlen, Serpentine Galleries
Albert Oehlen's paintings are to go on display at the Serpentine Galleries in October
German artist Albert Oehlen likes friction in his work. Whether combining delicate painting with the consciously naive, or the surreal with the abstract, he strives to create canvases with an 'underlying note of hysteria.' Speaking of exhibiting in galleries he said: 'I am not interested in the idea of staging my work in a space specifically conceived for it. I think that art should adapt to the architecture or fight with it.' This October, this painter of fractious works will have a solo show at the Serpentine Galleries.
This exhibition will be more than an exhibition of canvases. Just as Kandinsky did, Oehlen works with music in mind. To reflect this interest, his paintings will go on display to the sound of a newly-composed soundtrack by the Swiss ensemble, Steamboat Switzerland, a group that combines jazz, metal and contemporary scores.
At the centre of the gallery will be Oehlen's interpretation of the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. It might seem strange that a painter who loves anarchy in his work, should be drawn to an abstract artist who sought to conjure a spiritual peace in his, but Oehlen has painted four horizontal canvases to the same dimensions as Rothko's. Accompanying this central installation will be a selection of paintings from the last two decades.
Oehlen's works are nothing, if not varied, and this exhibition promises to be just as surprising as the artist himself.
