Danny Boyle's Trust on BBC Two
Danny Boyle's adaptation of the infamous J. Paul Getty story looks set to thrill on BBC Two
The story of the Getty family is one of such intrigue that it has inspired two on-screen productions in the last year: Ridley Scott’s film, All the Money in the World, and now Danny Boyle’s TV series, Trust.
Having aired in America in March to excited reviews, we've since been wondering when Trust would arrive on British screens. The wait is almost over: BBC Two has snapped up the rights.
Who is in the cast of Trust?
Donald Sutherland (Pride and Prejudice, The Hunger Games) stars as the miserly oil tycoon (played in the film by Christopher Plummer). Sutherland is joined by Anna Chancellor who wowed with her depiction of the conniving stepmother in Ordeal by Innocence.
Directed by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, Trust already looks as though it will boast the vivid aestheticising that characterises some of Boyle's most successful works. It's possible that the all-guns-blazing approach might become a little gimmicky at times – see a young woman literally staggering around a room while her machine gun rattles off rounds – but we're hoping an injection of dark humour will freshen up this now famous story.
Critics felt that All the Money in the World failed to capture the root of the Getty family's disfunction – and some have suggested that the same is true of Trust. Nonetheless, we hope that the high drama, lavish sets and dirty sense of humour will give this outlandish story of greed and excess a glamorous edge.
Trust airs on BBC Two at 9pm on Wednesday 12 September
