The Frankenstein Chonicles coming to ITV1
Are you ready for a terrifying and thrilling immersion into the London of 1827?

Well, get set, as next month the first series of The Frankenstein Chronicles hits our screens on ITV. The six part period-crime drama is a re-imagining of the Frankenstein myth complete with a stellar cast including, multi-award winner Sean Bean, Anna Maxwell Martin, Richie Campbell, Vanessa Kirby and Ed Stoppard.

Set ten years after the publication of Mary Shelley's gothic book, the chilling drama follows John Marlott, a talented investigator played by Bean, as he makes a shocking discovery of the body of a dead child. However, upon closer examination Marlott identifies the grotesque form as, in fact, a crude assembly of body parts. A dark investigation follows as he realises this heinous crime is just part of a wider and more horrific network of criminal activity taking place.

The Frankenstein Chronicles is based on literary and historical truth, combining real people in a real world with supernatural elements.
Tracey Scoffield, Executive Producer describes it as a re-imagined history: 'Although this is a story which involves the supernatural and a sense of prophetic doom hanging over the whole thing [...] it’s also set within a world that’s very real. There’s nothing about it that feels like a comic book or like a conventional horror piece.' Victor Frankenstein, for example, is not the central character but one of the suspects. Key historical figures appear in the story including Sir Robert Peel, William Blake, Charles Dickens and Mary Shelley herself.

Frankenstein has been re-interpretated countless times but Benjamin Ross, writer and director, had a strong vision for his series. The truthfulness of the chaotic and murky Georgian London setting was important to his concept aiming to portray a real sense of life and society during a time of huge change: when Sir Robert Peel was on his way to setting up the police force and people's interest in science and its possibilities was surging.
