New thriller by Phoebe Waller-Bridge to come to BBC
Killing Eve: a new eight-part thriller from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was the name on every millennial's lips back in 2016, when the young playwright made tsunami sized cultural waves with her play and TV comedy Fleabag.
Since her big break-out, the edgiest, shiniest cool girl on the block has been rather quiet, making just a few appearances in Goodbye Christopher Robin and the up-coming Solo: A Star Wars Story and Careful How You Go.
Thank heavens then, that Waller-Bridge and her insightful writing is set to make a return to the BBC – albeit with a new show that is a marked difference from the feminist comedy of Fleabag.
Killing Eve is a new 'high-stakes thriller' based on the Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings. Starring Sandra Oh (from Grey's Anatomy) and Jodie Comer (Doctor Foster), Killing Eve is the story of a bored M15 security officer who finds herself in a 'cat-and-mouse game' with a cruel assassin obsessed with the luxuries of her job. The BBC promises that the production will turn preconceptions of a thriller genre on its head – we'd be wary but with Waller-Bridge at the helm, anything is possible.
Damian Kavanagh, Controller of BBC Three, says: 'I’m delighted that BBC Three will partner with BBC One to bring audiences Killing Eve. It is one of the most exciting series of recent times and not only do we get to work with Phoebe again, who is a fantastic writer with a unique voice, the brilliant Jodie Comer will be back on BBC Three after her star turn in Thirteen.'
Sue Deeks, BBC Head of Programme Acquisition, says: 'Killing Eve is a startlingly original thriller. In turn both laugh-out-loud funny and edge-of-your-seat gripping, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has filled her new series with an array of wonderful characters brought to life by a dream cast.'
The eight-part series will premiere on BBC One later this year (and BBC Three will be making it available as a box set on BBC iPlayer).
