House of Cards spinoff in the works

What happens after House of Cards? Netflix's plans to extend the House of Cards universe without Kevin Spacey

House of Cards spinoff in the works
Multiple House of Cards spinoffs are in the works. Netflix informed Variety of the follow-up programmes, given the news that the white-knuckled political drama will end with a sixth and final season next year.

Following the allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp that the House of Cards lead actor Kevin Spacey sexually harassed him when Rapp was 14-years-old, the American streaming service confirmed yesterday that House of Cards would be coming to an end by 2018 as planned.

But no need to despair, Netflix is in the very early stages of development of other ideas for potential spinoffs. The most likely concept involves Doug Stamper, the political aide-de-camp from the series played by Michael Kelly, with Eric Roth potentially writing the show. Roth was an executive producer on the first four seasons of House of Cards.

But there are at least another two spinoff ideas also being explored, although writers have not yet been attached to them. Rumour has it that the other potential ideas might follow journalists Janine Sikorsky (Constance Zimmer) and Tom Hammerschmidt (Boris McGiver), who have spent many series attempting to expose the criminal behaviour of the show's central characters.

All the potential series will take place in the same universe as House of Cards. Such an event serves as an excuse for Netflix to cash-in on the series without having to tackle the difficult problem of what to do with Kevin Spacey.
