The June Edit
Lovely things to do in London in June - From our favourite new fashion collaboration to the new Design Museum exhibition
CHARLOTTE PERRIAND AT THE DESIGN MUSEUM
Described as ‘a free spirit who championed design for all’, Charlotte Perriand subscribed to modernist aesthetics that were reflected in her furniture and architecture designs.
The Design Museum's new exhibition showcases the work and ideas of the French architect and designer, presenting her creative process through a series of sketches, photographs and notebooks, as well as faithful reconstructions of some of her most famous interiors.
The exhibition opens on 19 June.
THE MARNI MARKET
Matches Fashion at Carlos Place is welcoming the Marni Market this month. We have our eyes on the one-of-a-kind fishnet or crochet bags, which are colourful and perfect for this summer, made in collaboration with Colombian artisans.
At Carlos Place from 1 June and available online from 2 June.
IN THE HEIGHTS
Lin-Manuel Miranda earned Tony awards for In the Heights as well as Hamilton – now his story of a tight-knit Dominican community In Washington Heights comes to the big screen. Directed by Jon Chu (Crazy Rich Asian fans) it stars the lovely newcomer Melissa Barrera.
In the Heights will be in cinemas from 25 June.
CORNISH DELIGHT
Cornwall is coming to London Chef Rick Stein will be holding a series of lunches and dinners at the Goring Hotel between 15 and 20 June. It will be a family affair, with Rick's two sons Jack and Charlie hosting an intimate demo during the pop-up. The Goring is also proposing a sleepover stay during that week.
You can book your table here.
LONDON DESIGN BIENNALE
The artist and designer Es Devlin was told that she was forbidden from planting a forest in the courtyard of Somerset House but she did it anyway. The result is the 'Forest for Change '– the centrepiece of this year’s London Design Biennale. Devlin believes the trees subvert the rules set by Somerset House’s Enlightenment-era designers and show how we can “counter this attitude of human dominance over nature”.
London Design Biennale opens on 2 June.
SUMMER SKIN
Chanel Les Beiges is a bit of a fashionista obsession - we talked a lot about their Healthy Glow bronzing cream this year. New shades are being released this month, to make sure we look as tanned as if spending the month in the Riviera.
The new Chanel Summer Light collection is out on 4 June.
THE NATIONAL THEATRE IS REOPENING ITS DOORS
The National Theatre reopens its doors with Jack Thorne's adaptation of After Life and a Michael Sheen-led production of Under Milk Wood.
The National Theatre opens on 2 June.
THE FATHER
Florian Zeller's directorial debut The Father, adapted from his play of the same name, is one of the important movies of the month.
Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for his performance, plays Anthony, a man with dementia trying to piece things together.
The movie will be in cinemas on 11 June.
H&M x BROCK COLLECTION
H&M's new collaboration with the L.A.-based women’s brand Brock Collection focuses on modern romance — approachable opulence mixed with streetwise ease and a hint of past decades — and is made from sustainable materials. Brock Collection is known for a sophisticated yet down-to-earth LA aesthetic, vintage-style pieces and emphasis on craft and cut.
The collection is out on 2 June.
OTTOLENGHI'S NEW DELI
A highlight of the month for foodies is the opening of chef-restaurateur and food writer Yotam Ottolenghi's new deli on Marylebone Lane.
The eatery, we are told, will have a hint of the art gallery aesthetic in mind. We are intrigued.
Ottolenghi Marylebone opens at the end of June.
WHAT WE'LL BE READING THIS MONTH
Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling portrait of the sexual and emotional lives of three women was the international publishing phenomenon of 2019. Now, the Three Women author’s first novel traces one woman’s journey from prey to predator. Joan’s life has been marked by male cruelty, but when she witnesses an act of violence, she flees New York for the Los Angeles hills. There she finds Alice, who helps her confront the traumatic past and gather the strength to retaliate.
In this searing meditation on the consequences of living in a patriarchy, Taddeo conceives an unforgettable anti-heroine.
Lisa Taddeo's Animal is released on 25 June.
LUPIN IS BACK
Remember being hooked on Lupin during those cold lockdown evenings?
Well, the French mystery thriller is back on Netflix on 11 June.
SERPENTINE SUMMER
The 20th Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Johannesburg-based practice Counterspace and directed by Sumayya Vally, opens on 11 June.
Vally is the youngest architect to be commissioned to design the Pavilion. Expect a vision based on past and present places of meeting, organising and belonging across London.
