Best Alfresco Drinking in London
Spring has tentatively sprung and to celebrate, here are a few of our favourite outdoor drinking spots
The cosy confines of London pubs lose their charm as soon as the sun comes out. If plastic cups and picnics aren’t your thing then check out our list of London’s best al fresco drinking spots.
A drink with a view
For sophisticated evening in the sun ascend the Trafalgar hotel to the vertiginous Vista Bar. While the elegant setting is reminiscent of Manhattan hotspots, the panoramic view across Trafalgar Square and beyond shows London at its most breath taking. In keeping with the glamour décor, this year’s menu plays homage to fashion, with a mixture of classic and contemporary drinks reflecting different accessories. There’s a stylish selection, but we recommend you compliment the luxurious setting with a glass of champagne.
For a more cutting edge and casual cool head to a multi-story carpark in Peckham (yes, really). Since popping up in 2007 Frank’s Café has become a London Summer institution. Despite the industrial severity of the setting, Franks has its own elegance; sculptures and art installations are spotted about a space designed by daughter of eminent sculptor Anthony Gormley. The bar hosts the kind of innovative foodie collaborations that you’d expect from an edgy pop-up (last year saw an oyster bar and series of supper clubs). It’s open from 11am and welcomes kids and dogs, so get there early and spend a whole day sipping on drinks and soaking up the sun. Note: Franks is only open between 4th July and 21st September, so make sure you don't miss it.
Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden . This secret spot above the bustle of the South bank is about as close to a wild woodland that you can get in London – with the added bonus of a well-stocked bar. Designed by the Eden Project, the space uses an abundance of plants – over 100 varieties of native wildflowers, allotments, fruit trees – and artful theatrical lighting to recreate the effect of sunlight dappled trough trees and green glades. Again, a gorgeous spot where the whole family can lose themselves and celebrate the sunshine.
Secret gardens
For the all the traditions of an English pub with the added chance to enjoy good weather, Notting Hill’s Windsor Castle is our top pick. The antiquated pub is steeped in history. What is now a delightful beer garden used to be the space where coachmen and staff were delegated while their masters dined and wined inside. The ingenious outside bar means drinks are always flowing and hidden heaters protect against fickle British weather and keep the alfresco space cosy past sunset.
For a more offbeat festival experience lose yourself in the Narnia of Battersea’s Magic Garden Pub. Renowned for hosting a vibrant programme of live music the canopied garden is a treasure trove of shimmering ethnic throws, squahy sofas and hippie chic accessories. The exotic vibe makes a trip to The Magic Garden feel like a miniature holiday right here in London.
For the more adventurous The Faltering Fullback has five story tree house garden hidden away in Finsbury Park. Covered in creeping ivy and spread across different floors this secret suntrap has plenty of lively spots with a few quiet corners. Bright furniture and an exceptional selection of Thai street food add a contemporary edge to this charming Irish pub.
