Interview with Trish McEvoy, Makeup Artist
We chatted with superstar Trish McEvoy, makeup artist, about changing your look and male beauty products
There's been a trend in recent years towards barely there, natural makeup. Pioneering this has been Trish McEvoy, a makeup mogul and innovator who grew her vision into a multi-million dollar enterprise by the age of thirty. Her products, from Trish McEvoy mascaras to beauty balms, have become a staple in women's make up bags on both sides of the Atlantic and her book The Power of Makeup: Look Your Best at Any Age is a reference for any women worth their bath salts. After her master classes at Harvey Nichols as a part of the Art of Style we caught up with her to discover her secrets and views on the industry.
You started out in 1995, how has the industry changed since you began?
Technology and confidence! Cosmetic technology today is so advanced, it gives us product innovators the power to realize more of our wildest dreams for addressing women's concerns. Thanks to the grit of so many pioneers, today's woman is much more empowered and informed, making for a super-savvy consumer. They keep our bar so high, it pushes us to meet their needs, and everybody wins!
Who are the brands / make-up artists to watch?
I watch everyone! The people I look to the most..... my clients
What do you think the future of the industry is?
Simple , multifunction formulas that perform at the highest level. Easy, ingredient-driven products that make a difference.
Your motto is that "makeup has power, inside and out". What have been some of the most powerful looks you've created? What are you most proud of?
Complexion perfection with effective skincare and very natural-looking coverage. Professional-level eye and face enhancement that any woman can achieve because she has mistake-proof colors and brushes. Long-wear formulas that allow women to leave home and forget about it. Fragrances that lift the mood. An organizational makeup-planning system that helps a woman de-clutter part of her life, and allows her to take looking her best anywhere.
Do you think there's a future for male beauty products?
Without a doubt—there is a present for it!
Trish McEvoy products are sold worldwide, have you noticed any interesting trends or differences, particularly between the American and British aesthetic?
Less and less. Historically British women are colour-lovers so I have always created vibrant tones but in flattering textures with her in mind. Today with our constant cultural exchange I think the gap between the new and the old country is becoming negligible.
What are your beauty essentials?
Fragrance. Hyaluronic Serum. SPF. My Makeup Planner organizer. Eye Base Essentials. Intense Gel Eye Liner. Mascara. Instant Eye Lift. Beauty Balm. Bronzer/Blush. Brow Color. Lip Color. Hairspray.
You recently gave a Master Class at Harvey Nichols' 'Art of Style' : can you give us a top style tip?
I believe in change. Whatever a person's style, I think there is a great art to adjusting one's look with time. Style is comfort: even if the look is very ornate, one must be at home in it. My tip is always to look a a picture of yourself; if you aren't happy with it, it is time for change!
