Feel Britannia: Carmel Allen
SERIES: We ask Creative Director of Heals Carmel Allen "What makes you feel emotional about Britain?"
With all the rhetoric and Big Ideas surrounding the general election, Culture Whisper wanted to collect some of the little things that spark emotions about Britain.
In anticipation of May 7, we asked our favourite figures in the arts to tell us what makes Britain feel like home.
Carmel Allen, Creative Director of Heals:
"I love our school uniforms and how we all buy new shoes and sharpen our pencils for ‘Back to School’. Queuing up to have your feet measured – only in Britain! I’m always thrilled when I see a village cricket match in progress on a summer’s evening. Tube drivers who crack jokes to their captive audience in rush hour. Not taking ourselves too seriously is a Great British trait to be cherished."
Carmel Allen is Creative Director of contemporary furniture and home ware shop Heals. She is also part of the Design Council and set up Kiss it Better children's charity in conjunction with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
