The world renowned dancer Sylvie Guillem announces her farewell performance at Sadler's Wells
Life in Progress: Sylvie Guillem's Farewell Tour
International ballet star and contemporary dance sensation Sylvie Guillem is to depart from the world of dance; the dancer has just announced that she will be performing an international farewell tour throughout 2015, which will arrive at London’s Sadler’s Wells next May.
Sylvia Guillem rose to fame whilst training at the Paris Opera Ballet School, and has performed with some of the world’s leading companies, including The Royal Ballet, Kirov, Tokyo Ballet, Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and La Scala.
Her farewell programme, entitled Life in Progress, will take place from the 26th to the 31st of May, and is to feature two new works. One of these will take the form of a pas de deux, with Italian dancer Emanuela Montanari, choreographed by Russell Maliphant, with lighting by Michael Hulls. This will not be a new collaboration, with Sylvie having joined both of these celebrated names in PUSH, the sell-out world tour of 2005, which returned to the London Coliseum earlier this year. Having reeled in 5-star reviews on its first outing, this year's showing was a sure success, and this new piece will undoubtedly bear the fruit of Guillem and Maliphant's onstage chemistry.
The programme will also include a solo choreographed by another of Guillem's previous collaborators, Akram Khan. For those who caught the 2006 Sacred Monsters, returning to Sadler's Wells later in November, this will be a source of further excitement. It was an odd pairing on paper, the long-limbed ballerina and intense, compact classical Indian dancer. But an experimental attitude has been instrumental to the success of both performers in the past, and is sure to pay off again.
Having been an Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells since 2006, the venue seems a fitting place for this magnificent and unparalleled dancer to end her thirty-five year long career.
The performance is likely to be an emotional one, including a touching solo from Mats Ek entitled Bye, that was originally created specifically for Guillem. Ek’s idiosyncratic style of choreography was one of the first challenges of Guillem's foray into contemporary dance.
Finally, to close the production, two male dancers, yet unannounced, will perform William Forsythe’s Duo of 1996.
Guillem, describing her departure from dance, stated, ‘I have been on an exhilarating journey, and now I’m about to change direction. This is a Life in Progress. My Life.’ Guillem was awarded a CBE in 2003, and is considered among the world’s leading dancers. Many will be sorry to see her go.
