Ilse Crawford: A Frame for Life, Studioilse
Inspirational designer Ilse Crawford opens her Bermondsey studio for a one off day of talks in this London design event
Ilse Crawford, the creative mind behind Elle Decoration, is opening the doors of her studio in Bermondsey on 1st November in a rare opportunity for the public to learn from this design tour de force.
You might recognise Crawford from her days as Editor at Elle Decoration UK, which she founded in 1989, for her work for Donna Karan Home in New York or more recently the Eindhoven Design Academy Holland. You are probably also familiar with some of the projects by her interior design brand, Studioilse, which has worked closely with Babington House, Electric cinema, Swarovski and Waterford Crystal, as well as a new collaboration with Cathay Pacific for larger chairs to fill the airline’s business-class lounges.
In this one off event, visitors will be able to explore the nooks and crannies of the Ilse Crawford studio in Bermondsey, which has become well regarded for its humanistic approach and desire to create comfortable spaces for everyday living. Along with Sissel Tolaas, perfume creator and scientist, Crawford will speak on the subject of interior design as well as challenging us to ‘see, smell and feel the spaces we live in, in new and inspiring ways’.
Tolaas is herself a fascinating figure; having worked with an archive of smells, the Berlin based scientist is able to reconstruct everyday scents on a molecular level. Incredible results are the smell of Calcutta, human cheese, the scent of her daughter every year since her birth and even the odour of Communist East Berlin.
Also featured in the programme is a conversation with pioneering developer Roger Zogolovitch of Lake Estates and Anita Le Roy who founded Monmouth Coffee on the subject of railway arches, which surround the studio space and form an important part of the studio’s aesthetic.
Although the price of this one day event is a little hefty at £250, an included copy of the new book by Ilse Crawford, ‘A Frame for Life’, and the opportunity to hear the entrepreneurial designer speak makes this an attractive day out. For any design enthusiast this should not to be missed!
