Turner Prize nominees 2014 announced

The Turner contemporary art prize stays true to its DNA with a list featuring audio, photography, printmaking and footage edited from Youtube

Collage is the unifying theme behind this year’s Turner Prize nominated artists, according to the BBC’s Will Gompertz.

Shortlisted contemporary artists Duncan Campbell, James Richards, Ciara Phillips and Tris Vonna-Michell use audio, video, craft and design – but, as befits the 30th anniversary of Britain’s most enjoyably contrarian modern art prize, no traditional sculptures or paintings appear on the list.

Duncan Campbell’s film It for Others treats a documentary on African art made in 1953. Canadian Ciara Phillips is now also based in Glasgow and is a printmaker. James Richards splices film footage from many different sources to create ‘poetic meditations on the pleasure, sensuality and the voyeurism that is within the act of looking’, according to the Turner Prize citation. Tris Vonna-Michell’s combines audio and photography to reflect on his mothers childhood in Berlin. Two out of the four nominees (Campbell and Vonna-Michell) are graduates of Glasgow School of Art.

The Turner Prize is open to British contemporary artists under the age of 50. The winner will be announced on 1 December 14, receiving £25,000, and the nominees will be on show at the Turner Prize Exhibition at Tate Britain from 30 September 14. This is one of the most eagerly-anticipated contemporary art exhibitions in London, be sure to give it a spot in your diary.
