Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Every month, Netflix gets an influx of new programming, starting with a behemoth upload on the 1st of the month and a steady stream thereafter. March ushered in the fourth season of House of Cards, but we’re guessing you’ve already made short work of that. So you’re probably ready for something new. Well, in April, comedy and kids’ films are the order of the day. But if that sounds a little too light-hearted for you, fear not; some moodier classics will also be making their way under the streaming giant’s red and white auspices.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2
The first series of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt boasted a distinctly leftfield premise. Having spent fifteen years underground, held captive by a cult leader, Kimmy (played by a preternaturally exuberant Ellie Kemper) comes to New York, hoping to make a new life for herself.
Penned by Tina Fey, this is a sit-com with a big heart and a sharp sense of humour. It’s impossible not to be charmed by the indefatigable Kimmy as she faces up to the trials of the Big Apple. The show aired its first season on NBC, but has come to Netflix for its second. We can’t wait.
The Ranch: Ashton Kutcher's new show
We’re not quite so sure about The Ranch. On paper, it sounds a little dated: a laugh-tracked sitcom in which Ashton Kutcher plays the prodigal son, a 35 year old semi-pro footballer, who finds himself back home on the family ranch. That said, some positive reviews have come in from US publications so maybe this one’s worth a watch after all.

Special Correspondents: Ricky Gervais, writer, director, actor
Ricky Gervais is comic royalty; both The Office and Extras are rightly hailed as masterworks, reaching tragi-comic heights rarely ascended. Since then, Gervais’ output has been a little shakier; Derek, his 2014 sit-com, received something of a critical drubbing.
His newest venture, Special Correspondents is a Netflix Original feature. As well as haven written and directed the film, Gervais takes a leading role alongside Eric Bana. They play a journalist and sound engineer duo who report themselves missing in Ecuador, all the while remaining in the safety of their New York apartment. But when this ploy sparks an international search operation, the pair realise they have to go for real.
Children's movies on Netflix
The big Netflix headline this April is the veritable influx of children’s movies. April 1 not only sees the arrival of Frozen, but also of titles from the Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda franchises. So, whether you’re looking to keep the kids entertained, or simply want to indulge your inner child, you’re in luck.
Hitchcock: Netflix goes back to the classics
If you’re looking for something a little weightier, then look no further than Rear Window and Vertigo. These aren’t films that need much of an introduction; whole monographs have been penned on these Hitchcock classics. All we’ll say is if you haven’t watched them, watch them. And if you have, watch them again.
