Whodunnit, Park Theatre
Celebrities including Gillian Anderson, Joanna Lumley, Jim Broadbent and Damian Lewis come to the Park Theatre for a starry and spontaneous murder mystery
North London's Park Theatre may be an imtimate neighbourhood performance space, but it has some very big name supporters.
These celebrity ambassadors will be out in full force for a new show, which invites a different star to take to the stage for a fully spontaneous take on a murder mystery.
It's an A List selection, with confirmed guests including Gillian Anderson, Joanna Lumley, Damian Lewis, Catherine Tate, Jim Broadbent, Simon Callow and many more. It's a precious rarity to see such established talents in a smaller theatre. The cherry on top is voice-overs from thespian royals Ian McKellen and Judi Dench.
Whodunnit [Unrehearsed] invites a different guest performer to step on stage and join an ensemble cast in a scripted murder mystery play. The twist: though the main cast are word perfect, the celebrity guest will be totally unrehearsed. Without ever seeing the script or receiving director, they will navigate the play with nothing but a hidden earpiece that will relay spontaneous instructions.
Then it is up to the unitiated performer – be it Juliet Stevenson or maybe Gyles Brandreth – playing the Inspector to solve a crime in real time. With a spooky manor house, an impending storm and an unexpected visitor, the show brings together all the murder mystery tropes, with some extra twists along the way.
The first mystery is the VIP guest, who will only be announced on the night of the performance. After the surprise reveal, the audience get to see not only how the star performer fares on stage without any preparation, but whether he/she has any detective skills.
Best of all the show will raise money to support the Park Theatre's mission to make shows accessible and available to broader audiences.
'I’m performing at Park Theatre to help raise funds for the charity,' says Gillian Anderson, who'll be fresh from dazzling in All About Eve on the West End. 'With no public subsidy, they need to fundraise over £250,000 a year just to keep the doors open. The monies raised from this production’s higher ticket prices will support their core ambition to present accessible theatre over the coming years and to further their work with the local community. A number of £10 day tickets will also be available. I do hope people will come and enjoy, and reap the benefit of supporting this fantastic cause.”
