The Southbury Child, Bridge Theatre

Alex Jennings plays a raffish vicar in this dark new comedy about family, faith and community

The Southbury Child
Three-time Olivier award-winning actor Alex Jennings makes his Bridge Theatre debut to play a charming but often inebriated vicar in the world premiere of The Southbury Child. Originally scheduled for spring 2020, the delayed production is now due to open at the Bridge in July 2022, following an initial stint at Chichester Festival Theatre.

Stephen Beresford's (Last of the Haussmans, National Theatre; Fanny and Alexander, Old Vic) dark comedy is set in an isolated coastal town, where parish vicar David Highland makes a decision that turns the congregation against him. The conflict in the community seeps into David's family life. As rifts deepen his marriage begins to fall apart and his moral compass wavers.

Artistic director at The Bridge, Nicholas Hytner, who has worked extensively with Alex Jennings to acclaim in Hymn and Cocktail Sticks, Collaborators, The Habit of Art, The Alchemist and The Winter’s Tale, will direct this new play.
