Nordic noir comes to the Almeida as artistic director Rupert Goold (King Charles III, ENRON) helms a stage adaptation of a film directed by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, itself based on a novel by David Farr (The Night Manager, Spooks).
Fifteen years ago the Almeida launched a stage adaptation of Festen, the toe-curling creation of Vinterberg, in which a suicide note and a drunken accusation turn a jovial family gathering into a writhing social hell. With fond remembrances of Festen’s rave reviews and in light of the continuing popularity of all things Scandi-noir, Goold directs another of Vinterberg’s films specially adapted for stage: the 2012 thriller The Hunt.
The original film saw Vinterberg share the director's chair with Borgen’s Tobias Lindholm, resulting in an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Popular school teacher Lucas is accused of paedophilia in a small Danish town, setting off a chain of events which tears a tight-knit community to shreds. The plot echoes Arthur Miller's The Crucible in its exploration of peer pressure and the fine line between innocence and corruption.
