Phoebe Gloekner's graphic novel about a girl's sexual awakening in the 1970s was adapted into one of our favourite films of 2015. Diary of a Teenage Girl, directed by Marielle Heller , brought the uncensored story to the screen with a cast led by Kristin Wiig, Alexander Skarsgård and Bel Powley.
But before writing the screenplay, Heller adapted the novel into a one act play. The Diary of a Teenage Girl premiered in New York 2010 and now comes to London for a UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse.
With a confessional, candid account of 15-year-old Minnie Goetze's secret affair with her mother's boyfriend it's an intense prospect on stage. But there's a sharpness and absence of judgement to the writing that makes Minnie's story as funny as it is provocative.
