Immerse yourself in the fantastical world of Disney Fantasia as the classic cartoon is re-imagined in a multi-media theatrical experience at The Vaults. Sounds and Sorcery combines world-class classical music, majestic installations and drama to transport audience members into an ethereal realm, filled with strange creatures.

Described by Walt Disney himself as 'a grand mixture of comedy, fantasy, ballet, drama, impressionism, color, sound and epic fury’, Disney Fantasia offers a wealth of weird and wonderful scenarios for live performance. The 1940 film is made up of eight animated segments, each set to a piece of classical music led by renowned conductor Leopold Stokowski. It pioneered new technology as the first motion picture to use stereophonic sound and took three years, 1000 artists and 100 musicians to create.

The result is a hypnotic series of tableaux, that match the drama of great classical music with images and narratives including fairies, sea creatures, magicians, comic ballets of exotic creatures, tales of classical mythology and much more.

The labyrinthine Vaults performance space beneath Waterloo will be transformed into these eight worlds with kaleidoscopic colours and interactive installations.

Upon entry, each audience member is given a pair of headphones and left with the orchestral music to guide their journey.

Binaural technology will make sounds move around you in an engrossing three-dimensional soundscape to complement the elaborate set designs and projections. Musical director Stephen Higgins leads a new recording of a 96-piece orchestra playing music from the original film including Night on Beethoven's The Pastoral Symphony, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

Founder and head of Silent Opera Daisy Evans brings her expertise on filtering classical music through headphones to direct this new show, which is produced by The Vaults in the same year Mickey Mouse celebrates his 90th anniversary.
