Scenes with Girls, Royal Court Theatre
Up-and-coming playwright Miriam Battye explore female friendship with 22 scenes revolving around two teenagers

Continuing their nuanced feminist programming, the Royal Court has commissioned Mancunian writer Miriam Battye to pen Scenes with Girls for her debut at the Sloane Square theatre.
The show does what it says on the tin: there are 22 scenes that revolve around girl friends Tosh and Lou. Inside a secret space, using an invented language only spoken by them, these best friends hypothesise about the universe, pop culture and their future together. Friends and lovers have pierced through their bubble, but Tosh and Lou have always clung to each other for support, and this time Tosh is not going to let go whatever happens.
Emerging playwright Battye wrote and refined the play while she was a member of the Royal Court Writing Group. We expect the show will be influenced by the Royal Court’s characteristic incendiary style of storytelling. Battye has been honing her talent writing plays for prestigious regional theatres including the Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Theatre Royal Bath. Scenes with Girls will be the first play to mark Battye out as a playwright of note on the London theatre scene.
The show will be directed by Royal Court Associate Director Lucy Morrison, who recently directed the enigmatic fairy tale The Woods in the Court’s upstairs space.
There are some allusions that the show will focus on female romance, so we look forward to seeing how Tosh and Lou’s relationship will play out in this intimate two hander.
