The Dumb Waiter, The Print Room

For those who like their laughs with a dark edge, this autumn The Print Room is reviving The Dumb Waiter , Harold Pinter’s classic comedy of menace and suspense.

The Print Room, a pocket-sized theatre in Notting Hill, has earned a reputation for Pinter productions following their gripping double bill in 2011. Their staging of One for the Road and Victoria Station had us perched on the edge of our seats. 

This intimate space is well-suited to the sinister claustrophobia so often experienced by Pinter’s characters. Claustrophobia is certainly a problem for hitmen Ben and Gus, the two characters in The Dumb Waiter. Throughout the one-act play they are stuck together in a gloomy, windowless basement, so typical of the enclosed rooms that populate Pinter’s drama. They await their orders, which come via the dumb waiter of the title, which darkly escalates the action as it delivers a series of increasingly bewildering messages.

This new production is Jamie Glover’s London directing debut, following a series of regional directing gigs. He is also an experienced actor, whose credits include numerous roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Following in the tradition of Pinter’s extensive experience as an actor and director as well as a playwright, we hope that Glover’s multi-tasking bodes well for his take on this well-known play.
