Rubbish, Southbank Centre
The myriad possibilities held... within a binbag
From the depths of the dustbin emerges a dazzling new adventure. Rubbish uses theatre to explore the vast variety of possibility held... within a binbag.
Set in a world that reveres its rubbish, this playful production focuses on the transformation of trash to treasure. The story shows four foragers finding value in stuff discarded on the scrapheap and turning a mucky mess into a wondrous theatrical world. The idea of waste becoming special is eye-opening for young audiences and encourages a more creative perspective on everyday objects.
Written and produced by eminent children’s drama company Theatre-Rites, the show captures children’s imaginations with an exciting combination of theatrical forms, from mime to puppetry. Lauded by the Guardian as “the company that has put play back into play” and by Time Out as “a leading light in children’s theatre”, Theatre-Rites are experts at entrancing young audiences. This latest production offers a delightfully silly set-up with an enduring message about value, conservation and recycling.
