Game of Thrones star Daniel Portman leads Mark Healy's stage adaptation of The Collector at the Vaults Theatre

The Collector REVIEW: Culture Whisper says: [STAR: 4]

The dingy tunnels of the Vaults Theatre are an apt setting for The Collector’s cellar. White sheets are draped over mismatched pieces of furniture, which fill the space almost to capacity. Home comforts swamp us. We feel crowded; captive.

Mark Healy’s The Collector is based on John Fowles’ novel, accounting the life of Frederick Clegg, a socially inept man with a fascination for collecting all things beautiful. A young art student, Miranda, is his latest obsession. He must catch her. No funny business, though, or bad intentions, he simply wants to be loved.

This two-man play entertains from start to finish - with a mix of complex character traits, injections of humour for light-relief and an ever-mounting tension. It could be speedier, and changes between Fredrick’s narration to Miranda’s could be slightly smoother. Each actor, though, inhabited his part to perfection.

Just one thing, Daniel Portman’s posterboy good looks don’t quite reflect Fredrick’s creepy, socially awkward characteristics.
