A Sun journalist, a 19 year old sex addict, a male prostitute, and a man who just can’t get it up: these are the four characters that populate the chaotic world of James Ernest’s Catnip, which opens at the Arts Theatre later this month.
24 year old Ernest, who trained as an actor, is most definitely a name to remember. Only his second full-length play, Catnip started life as a piece developed on the Royal Court Young Writer’s Programme. The theatre themselves have said spoken warmly of its courage in not shying away from the provocative, and called its exploration of the human psyche ‘bold and brave’.
The inhabitants of Catnip’s South Yorkshire village are all desperate, and all searching for love, and this play manages to be both challenging and heartwarming in equal measure. Oh, and we’re told it contains its fair share of naughty content.
