The Emperor, Young Vic
Katheryn Hunter shifts shapes to play a desot plus his subjects and staff in a new stage adaptation of the Polish book about absolute power
Not one to be limited by gender casting, Kathryn Hunter has built a career on her remarkable ability to transform. Tiny in stature, with limbs like elastic and a malleable, throaty voice, she has broken boundaries playing male parts including King Lear, Richard III and most recently Cyrano de Bergerac. She's an innovator in physical theatre, has worked extensively with Complicte and director Peter Brook and has impressed at the Young Vic with The Valley of Astonishment, Kafka's Monkey and Peter Brook's Fragments.
Now she will be returning to the Young Vic and reuniting with writer Colin Teevan (Kafka's Monkey) to play a whole cast of characters in Teevan's adaptation of a Polish tale of absolute power.
Written by journalist Ryszard Kapuściński, who's known for literary works that merge fact and fiction, The Emperor is about a tyrannical ruler on the cusp of losing control. The loss of power is told through the eyes of the leader's staff and subjects. Kathryn Hunter will play each and every part, in what's set to be a mind-boggling selection of postures and voices.
The show is a co-production with HOME Manchester and Les Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg and after its world premiere at the Maria Theatre at the Young Vic, The Emperor will transfer to Manchester.
Public booking for The Emperor at the Young Vic opens at 10am on Tuesday 1 March.
