Yet another 20th century classic receives the Regent’s Park treatment, as Arthur Miller’s All My Sons joins the open air programme. It may not be as light-hearted as other offerings in the 2014 line-up, but few playwrights can beat Miller for family dramas with epic scope.
All My Sons is a play teeming with secrets. In the wake of the Second World War, the Keller family are struggling to come to terms with the presumed death of son Larry – who has been missing in action for three years – and the role that businessman and patriarch Joe might have played in a military disaster. Events are quickly brought to a head as Joe’s other son Chris announces his intentions to marry Larry’s childhood sweetheart and facts from the murky past threaten to rear their heads.
This new version of Miller’s modern tragedy is directed by Timothy Sheader and follows his award-winning production of The Crucible, another of Miller’s most celebrated plays. After 2010’s powerhouse West End production, starring David Suchet and Zoe Wannamaker, we’re looking forward to seeing another take on this compelling tale of guilt and responsibility. Casting is yet to be announced, but we expect there to be a few well-known names in the mix.
All My Sons sits alongside another giant of 20th century American literature in this year’s open air season, as the theatre’s acclaimed adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird returns for a second outing later in the summer. Just make sure to be speedy in booking for both productions, as they are likely to be popular.
