Adler and Gibb, Royal Court Theatre

Acclaimed writer, director and performer Tim Crouch returns to the Royal Court Theatre with a biography that puts a unique twist on the genre

While nominally about New York conceptual artists Janet Adler and Margaret Gibb, this real-life narrative overlaps with the tale of two people who encounter a derelict house in the middle of nowhere, incorporating elements of the mystery thriller.
This will be the first time that Crouch has not starred in a piece that he has written and directed. He will, however, be joined by regular collaborators Andy Smith and Karl James, who are co-directing the show. The set, meanwhile, is being designed by Lizzie Clachan , known for creating jaw-dropping immersive landscapes for theatre company Shunt , so expect some dazzling visuals.
Crouch was last at the Royal Court with The Author , which was notoriously divisive among audiences. In line with the Royal Court’s history of (sometimes) shocking realism, the show experimented with the audience's familiarity with violence when atrocities were explicitly described but never actually seen. It is perhaps not for the faint-hearted, but we hope that this new work will be just as thoughtful, provocative and unexpected.
