Sikes and Nancy, Trafalgar Studios
The Dickens with a Difference season at Trafalgar Studios ends with writer/actor James Swanton’s Sikes and Nancy.
The show is adapted from one of Dickens’s own public readings which explored in depth the tragic murder at the climax of Oliver Twist; it is even considered by some that the strain of performing this shocking and grisly material was a contributing factor to the author’s early death.
True or not, this theory reflects the darkly gothic nature of the piece that Swanton has adapted for the stage. He himself is an accomplished physical theatre actor and performer of one-man shows, with adaptations of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Nicholas Nickleby under his belt.
Sikes and Nancy has already played to great success across the country and is touring before settling in London for the winter.
